Taking a Sabbath

Taking a SabbathThere is little regard for rest in the United States. We are obsessed with productivity, programmed to produce at all times and at all costs even at the expense of our own health at times. We skip meals or grab quick meals on the go, forgetting about slow digestion and enjoying our food.

Illness lurks in overly tired systems and usually strikes at most inconvenient times. Our fellow Europeans live more in tune with their bodies and take the time to enjoy and take their much needed rest.

Emotional Assessment of the Soul

What is most needed nowadays for the majority of people is the long overdue emotional assessment of the soul. Sometimes when we ignore our inner promptings and override them, the soul can stop the bodily functions in its track. And, like a petulant child, demand to be given attention. We need to become attentive to our bodies and our health, to listen to them daily so as not to get overloaded. As the soul can affect the body, so the body can affect the soul.

Rest and Relaxation

Many of us remember a time when Sunday was the day of rest. It was a time of getting dressed up going to your place of worship, sharing a meal together with family and spending the day together talking, napping, or going on car rides. No stores were opened, we could not buy anything, no cleaning was done, nothing, it was purely a day of rest and relaxation.

Taking a SabbathReversing Our Daily Life

Rest is essential and observing a Sabbath or a day of rest is a reversal of our habitual daily life. Observing a Sabbath disengages us from starting anything new and helps us to return our thoughts to the present, away from the past and the future. During the Sabbath we can not only find our center and balance but can also undergo a transformation.
